Stand by Me
(With special Thanks to Lassie – lying down, Cricket - standing watch and Isidora Spielmann for her Oil on Canvas of Cricket)
Lassie, a Clydesdale mare, came to us when Chris’ Father, Oliver, passed away. Accompanied by another one of his horses we expected her to settle in without much trouble. That was almost 12 years ago, and she still has never been totally accepted or possibly not chosen to completely join the herd.
She gained some increase in herd status when she gave birth to Quilo, becoming a first-time mother during a deep freeze in January 2018. However, after the weaning process, she moved back to the bottom of the pecking order.
When our “FEEL” clients come, she may or may not choose to be part of their experience, however, if she does decide that today, this person needs her, she takes on a whole new personality, even pushing Hope (our lead mare) out of the way.
But we all need a rest, and when it is Lassie’s time, despite everything else, one of the horses will keep watch for her. Today it just happened to be Cricket, the smallest horse.
How appropriate in these times of being separate within our herd. Speaks to so much as we deal with the Covid 19 pandemic, our country’s shared grief with Nova Scotians and our individual struggles, whatever they may be.
So today – we at The Horse Effect are hoping that those who need it – take time for a rest today, and those that have it – share your strength with others!
